Thales
Supportability Engineer LR08
As an Supportability / ILS Engineer you play a key role in defining and projecting the maintenance and service support approach for the Thales Hengelo products. The abbreviation ILS means; Integrated Logistcs Support but has little to do with supply chain logistics.
Your contributions encompass the effective support of new and existing systems during the entire lifecycle. From influencing the system design in its initial state, through sustaining supportability characteristics during the In-Service phase, until the eventual system decommissioning.
About the job
You will collaborate with product development and project teams where our equipment is being developed. The main activities of the Supportability / ILS Engineer are:
Analyzing and developing cost-efficient and effective maintenance solutions by creating the Logistics Support Analysis (LSA) in order to help guarantee the maximum operational availability of the Thales systems delivered to our customers;
Determining repair and maintenance requirements, identifying maintenance significant items and proposing required maintenance activities and resources;
Supporting the project manager in delivering the developed solution in both the bid and project phase and tailoring it to the end user specifications. To do so, you will also connect to customers, prime contractors and subcontractors on the proposed support concepts.
Writing (part of) proposal texts and performing cost calculations for the offered solution. To realize this, you will be able to use a suite of mathematical tools to generate the needed statistical data.
You will typically have 2 or 3 projects to work on. The ILS deliveries are managed by an ILS project manager who is responsible for the delivery of the ILS package (including documentation and training) to the customer. Although the projects run over a longer period (years), the workload for an ILS Engineer peaks in the 2 months before the ILS deliveries. During this time your alignment with the ILS manager will be more frequent (bi-weekly progress meetings).
During this delivery period your time is spent on analyzing a product and figuring out which components might require maintenance, both preventive and corrective. This is done by comparing the design with previous iterations, reading specifications, analyzing drawings, talking to engineers and, of course, your own judgement/experience. Therefore you can call or meet with different experts and perform a lot of your analysis and research behind your desk. If needed (and available) you can also visit the product itself.
Based on the information you gathered you will need to decide on the breakdown of the maintenance activities. Especially in the beginning you can align your decisions with experienced colleagues, who will be happy to help you gain more experience. With analysis complete you will be able to determine the service interval and complexity of the task to replace or repair components within a system. It will allow you to determine (with the help of certain tools) what the most cost-efficient maintenance approach will be. This analysis will be part of the delivery you’ll make towards the customer.
